The production used Kelmarsh Tunnel, a disused railway tunnel on the former Northampton to Market Harborough line, allowing crews to film in an “enclosed” space with fewer members of the public present, Harper said. Harper described the brick structure as “one of those treasures that you sometimes find when you’re filming, ” and noted that its remote location meant fans did not gather to try to catch a sneak peak at filming.

The film, which sees Cillian Murphy reprising Tommy Shelby and is set in 1940 with Shelby returning to Birmingham during World War Two, will open in selected cinemas before becoming available to stream on March 20. Paul Anderson says Arthur is present only in memory, altering the character’s arc
Paul Anderson, who played Arthur Shelby across the series, said he was “slightly apprehensive” about the move to film but called the finished piece “amazing. ” He confirmed that Arthur is not physically alive in the story and exists in Tommy’s guilty conscience; creator Steven Knight gave Anderson advance notice of the character’s sad outcome. Anderson added he thought the show’s run might have benefited from additional seasons but accepted the direction taken for the film.
Filming also returned crews to Birmingham and parts of Northamptonshire after much of the original series had been shot in other northern cities, a move that creator Steven Knight described as “really important” this time, and Harper said a larger film budget allowed the team to visit “all these incredible places and find all these little known gems. “
The next confirmed date is the streaming start on March 20. If the March 20 start holds, wider audiences should be able to stream the film within days of the limited theatrical run ending.
