Jason Hughes Teacher Killed After Teen Drives Away From Prank, Charges Filed

Friday at 11: 40 p. m. ET, the Hall County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded after a confrontation outside a North Hall High School teacher’s home left Jason Hughes dead; the sheriff’s office charged 18-year-old Jayden Ryan Wallace with first-degree vehicular homicide, a development that triggered the arrests and public statements this weekend. The filing of criminal charges is the immediate reason the incident is public now.

Scene description and immediate aftermath from Hall County Sheriff’s Office

The sheriff’s office said Wallace was allegedly among five people who had “rolled” trees with toilet paper outside the teacher’s residence. The group split into two vehicles as Jason Hughes exited his house. As Wallace began driving on North Gate Drive, Hughes tripped, fell into the road and was run over by the pickup, the office said. The teens stopped and attempted to help Hughes until deputies arrived; firefighters took him to a hospital, where he later died.

Jason Hughes Teacher role at North Hall and with NG3

Jason Hughes, 40, taught math at North Hall High School and served as the North Hall school director for NG3. The organization said Hughes had been on staff for seven years and called him a vital part of its growth. Hughes had spent 10 years teaching in Gwinnett before he and his wife, Laura, moved to Gainesville; both worked as math teachers at North Hall and the profile on the organization noted they were “immersing ourselves in the North Hall community. “

Charges, custody status and school district response

Jayden Ryan Wallace, 18, faces charges including first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, criminal trespass and littering. The other four people involved have been charged with criminal trespass and littering, the sheriff’s office said. There was no court record for Wallace’s case as of Sunday; inmate records showed he remained in police custody Sunday morning. Hall County School District Superintendent Will Schofield said the district was heartbroken and praying for Hughes’ family, and former students gathered at North Hall High School to pay their respects.

No court date has been scheduled as of Sunday morning ET. If prosecutors formally file charges leading to an arraignment, a court date will be set that will determine the next legal milestones.
