Capitals Sign Cole Hutson

The Washington Capitals have signed cole hutson to a three-year entry-level contract beginning this season, a move that completes the prospect’s likely jump from college after Boston University’s postseason exit. The deal carries an average annual value of $975, 000.

Cole Hutson Signs Three-Year Entry-Level Contract

The Capitals selected Cole Hutson in the second round, 43rd overall, of the 2024 NHL Draft. The three-year entry-level deal carries an average annual value of $975, 000. Hutson was 19 during his most recent season with Boston University and finished the year with 32 points (10 goals, 22 assists).

Across his collegiate career, Hutson compiled 80 points (24 goals, 56 assists) in 74 games, a total the team noted as the most among NCAA defensemen over the last two seasons. He led NCAA rearguards in scoring over that span and arrives to the professional ranks with considerable offensive production for a defensive player.

College Accolades and Final Season

Cole Hutson earned All-Hockey East First Team honors for the 2025-26 season, the second straight season he received that recognition and a distinction he shares with his brother, Lane Hutson. This season he led Boston University in scoring and ranked among the top defensemen nationally in points and average ice time.

Hutson’s junior-season totals of 32 points placed him among the top-scoring NCAA defensemen; he was tied for a top position among peers in overall scoring and was the lone Terrier on the First Team. His regular-season performance included multiple game-winning and overtime goals, and his average ice time rose from his freshman campaign, reflecting a larger role on the blue line.

Immediate NHL Role and Capitals’ Roster Context

With Boston University eliminated from the Hockey East Quarterfinals after a 5-3 loss to UConn, the door was open for Hutson to turn professional. The Capitals’ front office left the timing of the decision to him, following the same approach used for another college defenseman the prior season who joined the NHL club after his school’s playoff exit.

General manager Chris Patrick indicated the expectation is for Hutson to make the jump straight to the NHL if he departs college now. “If Cole Hutson comes out of college like we hope he does, maybe he’s a guy that can pair up with (Timothy Liljegren) and gives (Spencer Carbery) some options, ” Patrick said. The organization also noted that Hutson’s arrival would help fill the gap left when a veteran defenseman was traded ahead of the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline.

Hutson’s profile — a high-scoring, offensively gifted defenseman with recent international success and back-to-back conference first-team honors — frames him as a potential immediate contributor to Washington’s blue line as the club looks to bolster its lineup down the stretch.

With roster decisions now finalized and Hutson under contract, attention will turn to how the Capitals integrate the former Terrier and how much of an immediate impact he can provide at the NHL level.
