Rory McIlroy’s Players Struggles Continue as Sepp Straka Remains Inside Top 14

Rory McIlroy’s bid to defend at the Players Championship stumbled further as a level-par third round left him on one over, while Sepp Straka and several Ryder Cup teammates moved into contention amid a tournament day disrupted by a nearby shooting and delayed course entry.

McIlroy’s Third Round: missed momentum and a balky putter

McIlroy produced a scrappy round that undermined a late surge: two of his three bogeys followed shots into water off the ninth and 12th tees, the second erasing momentum after successive birdies had briefly lifted him on the back nine. He finished the round stuck on one over, leaving his slim hopes of defending the title in jeopardy and placing him in the bottom half of the field.

Earlier concerns about muscle spasms that had forced him to withdraw from a previous event were relieved enough for him to play, and he described his back as progressively improving. “I’m happy to be here for the weekend. I’m happy to get two more runs at it, ” he said after making the cut—satisfaction driven as much by survival as by scoring. He also rejected the notion that recent range work was a wholesale fix for his erratic driving, saying, “Did I find anything? I think that would imply that I was lost, which is not the case. “

McIlroy acknowledged his putting failed to match other areas of his game during the third round and said he remains uncertain about his schedule ahead of the Masters, though he noted his back is getting better each day.

Sepp Straka Among Leaders As Several Contenders Advance

While McIlroy struggled, teammates and rivals surged. Robert MacIntyre carded a seven-under 65—his best at Sawgrass—with nine birdies and a run of three straight from the 15th to set a clubhouse lead at seven under. Leader Ludvig Aberg had not yet started his round when MacIntyre signed, but the Scot’s position inside the top five left hope for a Sunday push.

Also moving well on the front nine were Justin Rose, Matt Fitzpatrick, Viktor Hovland, Sepp Straka and Tommy Fleetwood, all sitting inside the top 14 as the tournament approached the final day. World number one Scottie Scheffler rebounded with a bogey-free, five-under 67 to climb to four under for the tournament.

Security Incident Delays Fans; Logistics Shifted

The tournament day was complicated by a security incident near the course. Spectators were delayed from entering the grounds in the morning after two people were shot and killed less than a mile from the main parking area. The suspect later entered PGA property and encountered tournament employees during an attempted escape. As a result, course access plans were adjusted and gates will now open at 9: 00 am ET.

Organizers tightened operations while play continued, and players navigated the altered atmosphere as the event moved toward its final round. With McIlroy hanging on and a cluster of contenders—among them Sepp Straka—positioned just inside the top tier, the tournament heads into its concluding day with several storylines still very much alive.

The final round will determine which of the leaders can convert position into victory as McIlroy seeks to recover form ahead of his title defense at the Masters next month.
