He’s The Captain For A Reason: From Undersized Prospect To Wild Captain, Jared Spurgeon Reaches 1,000 Games

jared spurgeon will play his 1, 000th regular-season NHL game on March 14 when the Minnesota Wild host the New York Rangers at 5: 00 pm ET. The milestone caps a 16-season career spent entirely with the Wild and cements a legacy built on durability, defense and leadership.

Jared Spurgeon Scheduled For 1, 000th Game

Spurgeon is scheduled to reach the 1, 000-game mark in the Wild’s home game on March 14. He enters the milestone with 999 career regular-season games and will become the 421st player in NHL history to reach 1, 000 games and the 32nd player born in Alberta to do so. He will join another longtime Wild figure as one of the only players to wear a Wild sweater for the first 1, 000 games of their NHL careers and will be the 76th player to play his first 1, 000 career games with a single franchise.

Across 16 NHL seasons, Spurgeon has compiled 434 points (123 goals, 311 assists), 137 power-play points (36-101=137), 26 game-winning goals, 1, 618 shots on goal, 1, 728 blocked shots and a plus-126 rating in 21, 932: 14 of time on ice. He is the franchise leader in time on ice, blocked shots and plus-minus, ranks among the top in games played and power-play points, and leads Wild defensemen in several career categories.

He has appeared in 73 career Stanley Cup Playoff games across 11 postseason appearances, recording 30 points (9-21=30), 15 power-play points, 109 shots on goal and 165 blocked shots in 1, 680: 51 of playoff time on ice. Spurgeon was named the second full-time captain in team history on Jan. 3, 2021, and has held that role through the current six-season span.

A Quiet Captain, Family Life And Early Path To Minnesota

Off the ice, jared spurgeon has made Minnesota his home and built a low-key family life. His house contains little hockey memorabilia; it is filled with board games, puzzles, a piano his daughters are learning to play, photographs of his wife Danielle and their four children, and three large rescue dogs. He and Danielle were high school sweethearts, came to Minnesota in 2010 as young players, and have raised their family there. Their children—Zach, 16; Colbie, 11; Jayce, 8; and Myer, 7—are expected to watch as he reaches the milestone.

Spurgeon’s path to a long NHL career was not straightforward. At 5-foot-9 and wearing size 8 skates, he was drafted by another organization but went unsigned, then attended the Wild’s development camp as an invitee and returned for the Traverse City prospect tournament in 2010, a route that rarely produces an NHL contract. He was close to pursuing a career overseas in Austria with his older brother before earning a place in Minnesota’s organization and building a franchise-long tenure.

Family touches in his home underscore his priorities: he has expressed that the house is about the family rather than his hockey life, and even framed only a small selection of his playing memorabilia. The milestone will be observed at the Wild’s home game on March 14, when he formally reaches 1, 000 regular-season appearances with the same franchise.
