Flames Trade Nazem Kadri, Clearing Way for Rebuild and Draft Assets

Calgary players, remaining veterans and fans will face a roster teardown and a youth-first timeline while the club accumulates picks and prospects, with the trade announced Friday at 2: 15 p. m. ET sending Nazem Kadri to the Colorado Avalanche and triggering a clear rebuild path.

Flames leadership shrinks to Backlund and Coleman as club commits to reset

The Flames’ leadership group has been cut from six to two, leaving Mikael Backlund and Blake Coleman as the only holdovers from the core that almost reached the playoffs last season.

Jonathan Huberdeau is out for the season after hip surgery, removing another veteran presence from Calgary’s lineup.

The Flames will recall Hunter Brzustewicz and give him and Zayne Parekh power-play time, and the organization plans to eventually summon William Strömgren as part of the youth infusion.

Nazem Kadri’s metrics fit the Colorado Avalanche’s top-six mix

Nazem Kadri ranked in the 94th percentile in midrange shots on goal and the 92nd percentile in high-danger shots on goal this season prior to the trade, making him a statistical fit for Colorado’s offensive profile.

Kadri had a low shooting percentage this season (6. 9 percent) compared with last season (12. 5) and a career average of 10. 8, suggesting his goal totals could rise in Colorado’s offense, which led the NHL in midrange goals and midrange shots on goal this season prior to the trade.

Kadri averaged 19: 14 per game in 2021-22 while playing mostly with Gabriel Landeskog and Valeri Nichushkin, and he is likely to play a second- or third-line role with significant power-play time in Colorado down the stretch.

Craig Conroy’s deadline moves return picks, prospects and cap relief to Calgary

Calgary received a conditional 2028 first-round pick, a conditional 2027 second-round pick, veteran winger Victor Olofsson and 19-year-old centre Max Curran in exchange for Kadri.

The deal includes 20 percent salary retention by Calgary for each of the next three years, a financial detail tied directly to the trade’s terms.

Conroy has already reshaped the roster in recent weeks: the MacKenzie Weegar trade brought back Olli Maatta, Jonathan Castagna and three second-round picks, while the Rasmus Andersson deal yielded Zach Whitecloud, a conditional first and second-round pick and college defender Abram Wiebe.

What the Avalanche gain and what Calgary gains in return

Kadri led the Flames in points and shots on goal at the time of the trade, making him Calgary’s top scorer before being dealt to Colorado.

Kadri also brings playoff experience and prior success with Colorado, including career playoff production that featured multiple game-winning goals during past postseason runs with the Avalanche.

Calgary’s front office now holds six picks in the top 50 and eight picks in the top 68 of the upcoming draft pool, positioning the club to add multiple prospects as part of the rebuild strategy.

Conroy framed the move as a deliberate change of direction, saying the club needed a reset and that sending Kadri back to Colorado was aligned with the organization’s plan to improve long term.

For now, the flames roster will lean on remaining veterans Backlund and Coleman to steady younger players while management evaluates the incoming prospects and the college target they plan to pursue.

If Calgary signs the targeted collegian and integrates the incoming prospects as planned, the rebuild timeline and roster composition will change accordingly.
