F1 Calendar 2026 Chinese GP Leaves Russell With 100% Winning Start

George Russell claimed the Sprint victory at the Chinese Grand Prix, extending his 100% winning start to the season in a race defined by a frantic early battle and a late Safety Car. The result is now recorded on the f1 calendar 2026 after a 19-lap Sprint that saw pit-stop chaos and several high-profile failures to finish.

F1 Calendar 2026: Sprint Result And Podium

Russell crossed the line first, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc 0. 6 seconds back in second and Lewis Hamilton completing the podium in third. The Mercedes driver had begun the 19-lap Sprint from pole and, after a series of exchanges with rivals, made the decisive move into the Turn 14 hairpin on Lap 5 to pull clear.

Turning Points: Early Battles, Safety Car And Pit Stops

The Sprint opened with a frenetic fight for the lead. A surging challenge put pressure on Russell in the opening laps, and positions were swapped multiple times before Russell established control. The race was neutralised late when a stricken Audi had to be retrieved, prompting a Safety Car and a flurry of late pit activity. Several leading drivers pitted under that caution, reshaping the finishing order when the race resumed.

Finishers, Penalties And Retirements

Lando Norris finished fourth after a late sequence that saw him briefly ahead, while Kimi Antonelli recovered to fifth despite a poor start and a 10-second penalty for contact with Isack Hadjar on the opening lap. Oscar Piastri slipped to sixth after being overtaken late by Antonelli. Liam Lawson and Ollie Bearman capitalised by not pitting under the late caution to take the remaining points positions available in the Sprint.

Max Verstappen and Esteban Ocon completed the top 10, followed by Pierre Gasly, Carlos Sainz, Gabriel Bortoleto and Franco Colapinto. Isack Hadjar finished 15th ahead of Alex Albon, with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll both classified behind them. Sergio Perez was the final classified runner for his team.

There were multiple retirements: Nico Hulkenberg’s car was the cause of the late Safety Car and he failed to finish, while Valtteri Bottas also retired after suffering a loss of power. Arvid Lindblad did not finish after an opening-lap spin.

The outcome keeps Russell on an unblemished run at the start of the campaign, a streak that will be recorded on the f1 calendar 2026 as the season progresses. Fernando Alonso stated afterwards that he could not ‘physically’ continue in the Chinese Grand Prix, a development that added to the race’s list of incidents.

With the Sprint settled and the key incidents noted, teams will regroup and prepare for the Grand Prix, where tyre strategy and recovery from the Sprint’s incidents are expected to shape the main event.
