Sydney Weather Shifts From Sticky Humid Heat to Severe Storm Risk

Sydney Weather is poised to move from sticky humidity into a period of severe storms after a severe thunderstorm struck the Illawarra on Saturday and the SES received 52 calls for help. Showers are forecast to ease on Monday, March 9, but wet conditions are likely to return late in the week.

SES Reports 52 Calls After Saturday’s Severe Thunderstorm

Emergency services in the Illawarra region handled 52 calls for help over the weekend when a severe thunderstorm hit on Saturday. Of those calls, 34 were for storm damage and others were for flooded roads, and paramedics were called to assist a man who was struck by lightning at the Robertson Show. Rain continued through Sunday, prolonging the strain on response teams.

Sydney Weather: March Rain Totals at Kiama, Nowra and Albion Park

March is historically the wettest month for several Illawarra sites: mean rainfall for March is 149. 1mm at Albion Park, 142. 5mm at Kiama, 139. 2mm at Nowra and 123. 5mm at Bellambi. So far this month Kiama has recorded 47mm, Albion Park 23. 4mm, Bellambi 16. 2mm and Nowra 76. 4mm, figures that underline why the region has seen persistent showers and recent severe weather.

Forecasts Show Showers Easing on March 9, Then Returning Late Thursday

Forecasters say showers will ease on Monday, March 9, with up to 5mm of rain possible that day. Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be mostly sunny, but forecasts show wet weather resuming late on Thursday, with up to 5mm of rain each day for the rest of the week. That timetable gives emergency services a brief window before rainfall is predicted to return.

Showers easing on Monday, March 9 is the next confirmed milestone. If the wet weather returns late Thursday with up to 5mm each day as forecast, emergency services are likely to face additional calls for storm damage and flooded roads by the end of the week.
