Lima weather eases Sunday as SENAMHI heat alert enters final stretch

Sunday at 9: 30 a. m. ET — A milder forecast for lima on Sunday signals a brief break from the week’s intense heat, even as Peru’s national meteorological service, SENAMHI, keeps its orange advisory active through Monday, March 9. The timing matters: today’s outlook follows Saturday’s higher readings and lands inside the advisory’s final 24–48 hours.
SENAMHI’s latest guidance aligns with a Sunday outlook that caps temperatures around 26°C with a 20°C low, lighter southerly breezes, and no rain expected through the day. The advisory window remains the key reason this update hits now, framing Sunday as a relative cooldown before officials decide whether to extend alerts.
SENAMHI Advisory No. 078 runs through March 9
The orange-level Advisory No. 078 targets elevated daytime temperatures across Peru’s central and southern coast and highlands from Saturday, March 7, through Monday, March 9. Forecasters note thinner midday cloud cover that can boost ultraviolet radiation and call out afternoon wind bursts near 35 km/h. Public guidance emphasizes hydration, limiting midday sun exposure, and caution around open areas, trees, and light structures during gusty periods.
For Sunday in Lima, conditions moderate: no precipitation is forecast from the early hours through night, humidity holds near the low-80% range, and winds remain light from the south and southeast between roughly 9 and 15 km/h. Those calmer winds contrast with the stronger afternoon gusts flagged elsewhere in the advisory, while the capital’s temperatures sit several degrees below Saturday’s interior highs.
- Sunday high/low: 26°C / 20°C
- Winds: light, 9–15 km/h from the south to southeast
- Humidity: about 81–82%
- Precipitation: none expected through night
Lima districts split: East near 32°C Saturday, Callao around 27°C
Saturday exposed a sharp district-by-district contrast. In Lima Este — including San Juan de Lurigancho, Ate, La Molina, Santa Anita, and El Agustino — temperatures reached about 32°C after a cloudy morning gave way to partial clearing, with afternoon wind bursts prompting outdoor caution. By comparison, Lima Oeste and the Constitutional Province of Callao — covering San Miguel, La Perla, Bellavista, and Callao — hovered closer to a 27°C high and a 22°C low under morning clouds and partial midday clearing.
SENAMHI also warned that the perceived temperature could climb to roughly 35°C in northern zones such as Carabayllo, Comas, and Los Olivos. That higher felt heat reflects both elevated air temperatures and localized effects that trap warmth during the day. Against that backdrop, Sunday’s citywide maximum near 26°C offers some relief, even as officials keep the advisory in place through Monday.
Heat wave since March 7 and outlook to March 12
Beginning Saturday, March 7, SENAMHI identified an unusual heat wave in the capital, with several districts registering 31–32°C — roughly 4–6°C above Lima’s typical March highs of 26–27°C — and indicated the spell could persist until March 12. Forecasters tie the spike to warmer coastal waters, weaker coastal winds, and an “urban heat island” effect that concentrates heat in densely built neighborhoods.
With Sunday’s moderation, risk does not disappear. Midday thinning of clouds can still magnify UV exposure, and lighter winds do not eliminate the potential for localized gusts later in the day. Health guidance remains the same: hydrate, avoid extended midday sun, and use protection for vulnerable groups such as children and older adults.
For now, lima sits between a brief dip in temperatures and the still-active advisory period. Residents in eastern districts that trended hotter Saturday should continue to plan around afternoon breezes, while those along the coast and in Callao can expect steadier, milder readings through tonight.
The next milestone is fixed: Advisory No. 078 stays in force through Monday, March 9. If SENAMHI extends the alert, the new notice will define conditions beyond that date; if it lapses, regular bulletins will resume without heightened heat risk language.
