Virgin River Season 8: Two Longtime Cast Members Won’t Return After Season 7

The showrunner has confirmed that two longtime performers are leaving ahead of virgin river season 8. Marco Grazzini, who plays Mike Valenzuela, and Lauren Hammersley, who plays Charmaine, will not be returning as series regulars for the picked-up next season, though both actors could appear again in future installments.
What Marco Grazzini and Lauren Hammersley Exits Mean for Virgin River Season 8
Showrunner Patrick Sean Smith said Grazzini and Hammersley will not come back for Virgin River Season 8. The departures mark the same number of series-regular exits the show has seen across its first six seasons. Other exits previously included the actors who played Ricky and Dr. Cameron. Despite the departures, Season 8 has been picked up and most of the Season 7 series regulars are expected to return.
Grazzini’s character Mike was introduced as a recurring police detective and Marine friend of Jack in Season 2 and was promoted to series regular at the start of Season 3. His recent storyline included a long-running crush and relationship arc with Brie that culminated in a rejected proposal and later a rebound connection with a visiting medical investigator named Victoria. The showrunner noted Mike will likely be on the back burner until writers find a new story to pursue for him.
How Season 7 Developments Tie Into the Cast Shake-Up
Season 7 opens with a major, dark turn that centers on Charmaine. In the premiere, Jack discovers a body: Calvin has apparently been shot to death, and Charmaine and the twins are missing. That sequence makes Charmaine the primary suspect and drives a season-long mystery about the true killer. The episode’s choice to kill off Calvin was described by the showrunner as a way to close out a convoluted storyline and to enable a ‘Gone Girl’-style arc for Charmaine while being careful not to harm the children.
Hammersley, who has played Charmaine across all seven seasons, has been a series regular for the first four seasons and a recurring presence thereafter. Smith emphasized that departures are not necessarily permanent and that both actors could return in subsequent seasons. The show’s cast has been notably stable overall, with few exits and only one new series regular added since Smith became showrunner after Season 4.
Producers are not planning large-scale shakeups as a strategy to refresh the series; instead, they are focused on the longevity of characters who still have strong story potential. Smith said decisions will have to be made as characters run their course and hinted that bringing in new blood may become necessary over time. No promotions to series regular are planned for Season 8, and longtime supporting players will continue to be significant presences despite not being elevated.
Even as Grazzini and Hammersley step back, other Season 7 arcs carry forward into the new season. One notable cliffhanger involved Ben Hollingsworth’s character Brady, who is shown in a terrifying crash in the final seconds of the Season 7 finale; he and other regulars are expected to return for the next season. The production appears to be balancing cast continuity with selective departures as it prepares for the upcoming run.
Looking ahead, the series will move into its next chapter with a largely intact ensemble but with a couple of familiar faces absent from the regular roster. Writers and producers have indicated they will preserve the characters they can sustain while planning how to refresh the show’s story engine when needed.
