St. Patrick’s Day Ireland Parades Trigger Dublin Road Closures And Off-Licence Sale Delays

As st. patrick’s day festivities get underway on Tuesday, Dublin will host Ireland’s national parade with rolling road closures and adjusted alcohol sales hours in effect. Tens of thousands are expected along the route as authorities emphasize a family-friendly atmosphere and safety planning across the capital.
Parade Route, Start Time, And Grand Marshal
The national parade in Dublin begins at 8: 00 am ET on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, and is expected to run for about two hours. The procession starts at Parnell Square North, travels down O’Connell Street, crosses O’Connell Bridge, and winds through the south side of the city before finishing at the Cuffe Street/Kevin Street junction.
This year’s theme, “roots, ” will be reflected in 12 large-scale floats and a lineup featuring Macnas, Bui Bolg, Spraoi, Inishowen Carnival Group, Curious State, Volkidana, The Outing Queer Arts Collective, Artastic and ArtFX, alongside new entries from Lumen Street Theatre and Show CoMotion. Podcast presenter and Howth native Vogue Williams serves as grand marshal. She called the honor a chance to champion Irish creativity and said she looks forward to sharing the celebration with people at home and across the Irish diaspora.
Other cities will also mark the occasion: Galway’s parade starts at 7: 00 am ET, Cork’s at 9: 00 am ET, and Kilkenny’s at 9: 30 am ET. In Dublin, a 26km Harbour2Harbour charity walk between Howth and Dún Laoghaire is also set for Tuesday.
Road Closures And Safety Guidance
An Garda Síochána will operate rolling road closures and traffic restrictions across Dublin city centre from early Tuesday. Parking is not permitted along the parade route and vehicles will be towed. Traffic will be diverted through the North and South Circular Roads while closures are in place, with local access facilitated where possible. No vehicles can enter the parade route until restrictions are lifted.
Attendees are advised to pick a viewing area in advance, arrive early, and plan journeys ahead of time. Police urge the use of public transport or park-and-ride facilities, careful supervision of children to avoid separation, and ensuring young attendees have contact details for a responsible adult. People are also asked to pack sensibly, mind personal belongings, follow instructions from Gardaí and stewards, and allow extra time as crowds disperse after the parade. A high-visibility policing operation will continue across the city following the event.
St. Patrick’s Day Alcohol Sales And Hospitality Hours
Unique holiday licensing rules apply on st. patrick’s day, with changes that especially affect off-licence and supermarket alcohol sales. Nationwide, off-licences can only sell alcohol between 8: 30 am ET and 6: 00 pm ET on Tuesday. In Dublin city centre, off-licences are voluntarily delaying alcohol sales until 12: 00 pm ET—after the national parade—as part of a Garda public safety plan to maintain a family-friendly environment.
- Off-licences (nationwide): 8: 30 am–6: 00 pm ET
- Off-licences (Dublin city centre): Sales paused until 12: 00 pm ET
- Pubs and restaurants: 6: 30 am–7: 30 pm ET
- Nightclubs and late bars: Service permitted until 10: 30 pm ET
Authorities are also urging responsible travel and road use during the holiday: slow down, never drive under the influence, put phones and other distractions away, and always wear a seatbelt. With large crowds expected before, during, and after the parade, officials recommend building extra time into plans—whether attending the events, dining in the city, or purchasing supplies for home gatherings.
With major parades set across the country, a high-profile grand marshal leading in Dublin, and temporary restrictions in place to support safety, Tuesday’s program offers a packed schedule for residents and visitors marking st. patrick’s day.
