Greater Sudbury Declares Significant Weather Event — Sudbury Star

The City of Greater Sudbury has declared a Significant Weather Event beginning at 5: 00 pm ET on Sunday, March 15 and continuing until further notice, the city stated in a press release. Sudbury Star readers are advised that the move signals hazardous storm conditions and possible delays to municipal services rather than an automatic reduction in service levels.
What The Declaration Means For Residents
The declaration, issued under Ontario Consolidated Regulation 239/02 under the Municipal Act, places all roads and sidewalks maintained by the city in a designated “state of repair” until the event is cancelled. That designation is intended to alert drivers and pedestrians to use an appropriate level of caution when travelling and to avoid unnecessary travel during the event.
The city said staff will continue to work diligently to ensure public safety, but it may take longer than normal to maintain roadways and sidewalks typically kept during this season. The declaration is not necessarily a notice of road closures or a reduced level of service; it is intended as a caution to residents while crews manage storm conditions.
The city will update the public when the Significant Weather Event has ended, using the municipal website, social media and a public service announcement to local media. When the declaration is cancelled, the standard timeline for winter road maintenance will resume.
Sudbury Star: Services, Transit and Waste Collection Impact
Residents should expect potential delays to garbage and recycling collection as crews complete rounds in the storm. The city has asked for patience while collection continues and reminded households that regular winter waste placement requires waste to be placed in a visible location on the ground as close to the roadway as possible.
The city warned residents not to place waste on top of or behind snowbanks, on the sidewalk, on travelled roadway or in any area that would interfere with road or sidewalk maintenance. Following those placement rules helps crews complete collection and keeps routes and sidewalks safer for maintenance work during the event.
Leisure programs and GOVA transit service schedules may also be impacted by the weather. The city said updates for scheduled events or transit delays will be posted as required, and it advised residents with specific questions to call 311. Real-time bus information is available on the city’s transit information site for those tracking service changes.
Residents are urged to monitor municipal channels for further updates, to exercise caution if travel is necessary, and to follow the city’s placement guidance for waste to avoid interfering with maintenance crews. The declaration will remain in effect until city officials announce it has been cancelled and normal maintenance timelines resume.
