Ed Harris and Amy Madigan: Inside a 40-Year Marriage, Collaborations, and Their Daughter Lily

After more than 45 years together, ed harris and Amy Madigan remain a rare Hollywood constant, a partnership that began with a chance theater encounter, led to a 1983 wedding, and continues today on stage and screen—now with their daughter following in their footsteps.

How They Met and Married

Their story started in 1980, when Madigan first saw Harris perform in Sam Shepard’s play Cowboy Mouth in Los Angeles. She later recalled the moment felt cinematic: “It was like something you see in a movie or hear in a song. ” Reflecting on that first impression, she added, “I just thought — ‘Well, there he is. ’ It was obvious to me that I’d see him again. ”

The connection took root through work in 1981, when the two performed together in a play titled “prairie avenue” by Edward Allan Baker at a small theater on Melrose Place. Two years later, on November 21, 1983, they married while working on the film Places in the Heart. Although some assumed the romance began on that set, Madigan pushed back on the idea of a whirlwind on-set love affair, noting that their bond had been building long before the movie.

Both have sustained acclaimed careers while frequently collaborating. ed harris has been nominated for four Oscars, including for Apollo 13 and The Truman Show, and earned an Emmy nomination for his role on Westworld. Madigan, known for standout turns in Field of Dreams and Uncle Buck, received an Oscar nomination at age 75 for playing Aunt Gladys in Weapons—her first Academy nod since 1986.

Across decades, the couple has reunited on projects ranging from films like Pollock to numerous stage productions. Harris has described the unique ease of working with his spouse: “We both really enjoy what we do and it’s really fun to work together. It’s because you know each other, you can talk about the work, collaborate, ask each other questions and penetrate the material together. You trust and love each other, and it’s fun to be together doing what you love. ”

He has also spoken about how the nature of acting deepens their connection: “The acting thing is so intimate and personal. If we’re not working together … you can’t really talk about your day very well. When you’re working together, though, there’s so much that is shared, so much unspoken thought and emotion that goes into the work, that it really draws you closer. ”

Madigan echoed that sentiment, particularly about filming love scenes with a real-life partner: “The closeness of being married gives us the ability and the freedom to do those kinds of things. I mean, with another actor you’d have to spend a lot of time and energy getting to know them first. ”

Their Daughter, Lily Dolores Harris

The couple welcomed their daughter, Lily Dolores Harris, in 1993. She has since entered the family business, graduating from the American Conservatory Theater’s MFA program in 2020. Describing her artistic approach, Lily has said she strives for “simplicity, truth, and humor, ” and is “constantly seeking the magic” in her work.

Lily’s credits include an appearance on an episode of Chicago Med along with roles in short and feature films. In 2025, she and Harris appeared together in the short Off the Horse, portraying a father and daughter—an on-screen pairing that mirrors their real-life bond and extends the family’s long-running tradition of collaboration.

From an auspicious first sighting in a small Los Angeles theater to a marriage that has spanned more than four decades, this enduring partnership has grown through shared work, mutual trust, and a family legacy that now includes a second-generation performer.
