Airpods Max 2 Launch In US, UK And Australia Sparks Price Shift, Leaves Original Headphones Poised For Discount

Apple has unveiled the airpods max 2, a second-generation take on its flagship over-ear headphones that promises improved active noise cancellation, new H2-driven features and a notable price rise in Australia while holding steady in the US and UK.
Airpods Max 2 Features, Chip Upgrades and Pricing
The new model introduces an H2 chip, bringing features previously seen in Apple’s smaller earbuds to the over-ear category. Notable additions include Adaptive Audio, which adjusts noise-cancelling levels to match the environment; Live Translation for real-time translation of conversations; Voice Isolation to prioritise voices in calls; and the ability to use the Digital Crown as a camera shutter control.
Pricing for the sequel is set at £499 in the UK and $549 in the US. In Australia the price has risen to AU$999, an AU$100 increase from the previous model’s launch price. The launch was unannounced, with the new headphones appearing without prior public warning in March 2026.
Design, Materials and What Hasn’t Changed
Apple has been quiet on major design alterations. The new pair retains the same physical dimensions and finish options as the recent refresh, coming in Midnight, Starlight, Blue, Purple and Orange. The company highlights environmental improvements, stating the headphones are made with “100 percent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets. “
The AirPods Max 2 weigh the same 386. 2g as the first-generation model and keep the single-piece anodised aluminium ear cups, stainless-steel headband with breathable mesh canopy, and memory foam ear cushions that characterised the original. The much-criticised Smart Case also returns, preserving an ultra-low-power mode but remaining minimal in protective coverage.
Product Positioning, Legacy Model and Market Implications
The original AirPods Max debuted at a higher headline price and received a minor refresh in 2024 that switched the connector port from Lightning to USB-C and lowered the UK price to £499 while leaving US and Australian pricing unchanged. With the arrival of the successor, the report suggests a stronger likelihood of discounts on the original AirPods Max as retailers and Apple adjust inventory for the new model.
In practical terms, buyers weighing an upgrade will find much of the Max experience familiar — the weight, fit and digital crown controls remain — while the second generation focuses on software-driven refinement and the addition of features enabled by the H2 chip. Apple’s relative silence on substantive design changes leaves some questions about comfort and fit unanswered, even as the company sells the new model on improved noise-cancelling and translation capabilities.
What is confirmed is that the AirPods Max 2 largely preserve the first model’s premium build and finishes while shifting the competitive conversation toward feature set and value, especially in markets where the price has changed. Consumers and retailers now face a clearer choice between holding out for the new hardware or seeking possible discounts on the outgoing model as the product cycle resets.
