Weather Warning Colorado Leaves Extreme Fire Danger, Then Wind, Cold and Snow

A sweeping weather warning is in effect for Colorado this weekend as conditions shift from dangerous fire weather Saturday to powerful winds, a rapid temperature drop and a quick burst of snow overnight into Sunday. The weather warning underscores elevated wildfire risk across lower elevations and travel hazards from high winds and sudden cold.

Weather Warning: Critical Fire Conditions Saturday

Warm, dry and windy conditions are creating widespread critical fire danger across the lower elevations of Colorado Saturday. Temperatures along the Front Range and eastern plains are expected to climb into the mid to upper 70s while humidity falls to as low as 7–14 percent, a combination that greatly increases the potential for rapid fire spread.

Sustained west winds around 25 to 30 mph are forecast with gusts of 40 to 60 mph through the afternoon. Near the foothills, including parts of Boulder County and northern Jefferson County, brief gusts could reach around 70 mph between 3: 00 pm ET and 7: 00 pm ET Saturday. A Red Flag Warning is in effect across the Denver metro area and much of eastern Colorado through Saturday evening.

Cold Front Brings Violent Wind Shift Overnight

A powerful cold front is expected to sweep across the state late Saturday night and is forecast to move through the Denver metro area around 2: 00 am ET, bringing a sudden wind shift and a burst of precipitation. Behind the front, north winds could gust between 55 and 65 mph, creating difficult travel conditions overnight and into Sunday as temperatures fall rapidly below freezing.

The overnight wind shift and strong post-frontal northerlies are likely to persist into Sunday, with strong north winds potentially continuing through Sunday afternoon and gusts near 60 mph. Even where daytime sunshine returns, the combination of cold air and wind will keep conditions raw; wind chills may struggle to climb much above 20 degrees during the day.

Snow, Short-Term Impacts and Outlook

A quick round of snow is expected overnight into early Sunday. Most lower-elevation areas, including the Denver metro area, could see a dusting up to about 1 inch, while the Palmer Divide may receive 1 to 3 inches. The primary concerns for the weekend remain wildfire spread on Saturday and hazardous winds and rapidly changing travel conditions into Sunday.

Winds are expected to relax on Monday as high pressure builds over the western United States, leading into a rapid warming trend through the following weekend. Temperatures could climb well into the 80s across the Front Range, with the potential for record-breaking warmth for mid to late March. That return of warm, dry weather could bring renewed wildfire concerns later in the week.

The weather warning highlights the need for caution: any spark during the critical fire weather period could grow quickly, and travelers should prepare for sudden wind-driven hazards and abrupt drops in temperature as the front moves through.
