Players Leaderboard: Ludvig Aberg Surges While McIlroy And Scheffler Scrape Through At Sawgrass

Ludvig Aberg’s blistering nine-under-par 63 vaulted him to the top of the players leaderboard at THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Florida, leaving Xander Schauffele two shots back and a handful of former major champions fighting to stay in contention heading into the weekend.

Players Leaderboard: Who’s Leading And Who’s On The Bubble

Aberg sits at 12 under after an exceptional second round that included two chip-in eagles on the front nine. Xander Schauffele is in solo second at 10 under after a 65, while Cameron Young occupies third at nine under following a 67. Justin Thomas remains in the mix after carding his second straight 68.

The world’s current top two struggled to find form but survived the cut line. Scottie Scheffler, the winner of the tournament in each of the two previous years, posted a 73 and Rory McIlroy signed for a 71; both finished the round at one over and are inside the top 65 plus ties that made the cut. The cut came at two over par.

Key Rounds, Notable Scores And Who Missed The Cut

England’s challenge is being led by Tommy Fleetwood and Matt Fitzpatrick, who are both on five under. Fleetwood mixed birdies and bogeys before registering an eagle three on the 16th for a second successive round and carded a 70. Fitzpatrick posted a 69 but missed a short putt on his final hole that would have taken him to six under.

Justin Rose moved to four under after a 68, while Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre remained at level par following a 72. Several players failed to advance, with Shane Lowry and the English quartet of Harry Hall, Aaron Rai, Marco Penge and Jordan Smith all missing the cut.

The leaderboard shows the field bunched behind Aberg: selected standings list Aberg at -12, Schauffele at -10, Young at -9, and a group at -8 featuring players such as Justin Thomas and Corey Conners from Canada. Those further down include players at -7, -5, -4 and -3, with names and nationalities spread across Europe and North America.

What Changed This Round And What Comes Next

Aberg’s round was the standout development, the nine-under 63 propelled by two spectacular eagles and the ability to capitalize on benign scoring conditions. Schauffele’s 65 was similarly strong and kept him within striking distance.

For McIlroy, finishing with a birdie on the ninth was a relief after coming into the week having missed time with a back issue; he said his back “feels pretty much there” and that he hit the ball better in the second round. McIlroy also noted missed opportunities with the putter, having missed several birdie attempts inside 20 feet. Scheffler also birdied his closing hole to secure his place for the weekend after an unusually erratic round.

Play will resume with the final two rounds at TPC Sawgrass. The immediate storyline will be whether Aberg can maintain the momentum that produced two rare chip-in eagles and a 63, or whether established contenders can mount a charge from within a tightly packed chasing group. The cut and the presence of multiple past champions and top-ranked players promise a high-stakes weekend of scoring swings and strategic play at the iconic venue.
