Hank Azaria Pays Tribute to Robin Williams and Gene Hackman As He Celebrates 30th Anniversary of “The Birdcage”

Hank Azaria marked the film’s 30th anniversary by slipping back into the role of Agador Spartacus and paying tribute to robin williams and other collaborators while recreating the character’s accent and costume. The actor, 61, donned a familiar “straight-looking” tank and delivered a short message to fans in character.
Robin Williams Remembered in Azaria’s Anniversary Message
Azaria opened his video, in character as Agador, saying: “Hello, everybody. It’s the 30th anniversary of The Birdcage movie, so I wore my special shirt. ” He returned to Agador’s accent and offered a personal shout-out that included robin williams, Gene Hackman and Mike Nichols: “Rest in peace Mama, and rest in peace Gene Hackman and Robin Williams and Mike Nichols, and my love to Nathan [Lane] and Calista [Flockhart] and Dan [Futterman], and everybody else from that movie. 30 years, my God!”
The short clip ended with a playful moment in which Azaria noticed he was wearing shoes and then fell out of frame, closing the message on a comic note consistent with the film’s tone.
Agador’s Accent, Casting Notes and Azaria’s Origins for the Role
Azaria said the accent he used for Agador was an impression of his maternal grandmother, whom he called Mama. He also reflected on how the role evolved during casting and preparation. In a discussion in a 2021 Mike Nichols biography, he said the housekeeper part had originally been intended for another actor before the creative team reconsidered casting choices to avoid introducing racial issues into the film’s story.
He described experimenting with different versions of Agador: “I worked up different versions [of Agador]. One was more understated, barely obviously gay, almost a street tough. And one was the character that ended up in the movie. ” Azaria said he had grown up around a range of flamboyant figures and tested variations of the character with a friend who was a drag queen, who gave the role his “seal of approval. “
Legacy: Awards, Box Office and Why the Story Endures
The Birdcage, adapted from the 1978 French play and film La Cage aux Folles by director Mike Nichols and screenwriter Elaine May, won over critics and audiences and earned nominations at major awards shows. The ensemble included Nathan Lane as Albert Goldman opposite robin williams as Armand Goldman, with Calista Flockhart and Dan Futterman playing the younger couple whose wedding sets the story in motion, and Gene Hackman and Dianne Wiest as the visiting conservative parents.
In March 2025, Nathan Lane reflected on the film’s reception and staying power, calling it “one of the great comic plots of all time. ” He said the story has succeeded across formats — as a play, a foreign film, a musical and the film version — because it is primarily about love and family and about the lengths a long-term gay couple will go to for their son.
The anniversary message from Azaria revisited those themes while offering a personal and affectionate nod to the colleagues who shaped the film and those he remembered as part of his own life and career.
