IMD Warns of Heatwave as Temperature Spikes Across Mumbai Region

The India Meteorological Department issued a heatwave alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar and a yellow alert for parts of Maharashtra, warning of unusually high daytime temperatures. Monday at 5: 07 a. m. ET the IMD’s weather bulletin said maximum temperatures were likely to hover between 35. 8 and 33. 6 degrees Celsius on March 9, a temperature rise that will affect city residents and suburbs immediately.

Temperature Readings: Santacruz, Colaba and Akola

The Regional Met Centre in Mumbai recorded minimum temperatures of 21. 3 degrees Celsius at Santacruz and 24. 0 degrees Celsius at Colaba on Monday morning. The bulletin noted maximum values that day were forecast to reach as high as 35. 8 degrees Celsius in parts of the city, and Akola logged the highest maximum in Vidarbha at 40. 9 degrees Celsius during the latest observation period.

IMD Alert Zones: Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad

The IMD predicted heatwave to severe heatwave conditions in isolated pockets of Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad on Monday and Tuesday, while issuing a yellow alert for wider parts of Maharashtra. The bulletin listed Raigad, Ratnagiri, Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Akola and Amravati among districts where hot and humid conditions in isolated pockets were very likely.

Vidarbha Heat: Akola’s 40. 9 degrees Celsius and Washim’s 17. 6 low

The India Meteorological Department’s Regional Meteorological Centre Nagpur reported dry weather across the Vidarbha region, with maximum temperatures appreciably above normal and minimum temperatures near normal. The highest maximum temperature of 40. 9 degrees Celsius was recorded in Akola, while the lowest minimum temperature of 17. 6 degrees Celsius was recorded in Washim; one or two places in Vidarbha were likely to witness heatwave on March 9, 10 and 11.

Meteorologists noted an upper air cyclonic circulation over south Bangladesh and neighbouring areas persisting between 1. 5 km and 3. 1 km above mean sea level, and a trough extending from Bihar to Marathwada Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh that continues to influence weather patterns over Vidarbha. For now, rainfall activity across the region remains minimal, the bulletin said.

The IMD’s weather bulletin was issued Monday at 5: 07 a. m. ET and forecasts heatwave conditions for March 9 and March 10, with additional heatwave likelihood in parts of Vidarbha on March 9, 10 and 11; residents should follow local advisories and heat guidance in the coming days.
