Campbell River’s Tyler Turner Wins Bronze, Extends Paralympic Medal Run

Fans, family and Canada’s Paralympic team gained another podium finish when Campbell River native tyler turner took bronze; Sunday at 12: 00 p. m. ET the medal was awarded after a reviewed Big Final at the Milano-Cortina Paralympic Winter Games.

Tyler Turner’s bronze caps a chaotic Big Final for Canada

Turner, 37, adds a fourth Paralympic medal to his career and his first at the Milano-Cortina Games, bringing immediate relief and celebration for family members who travelled from Western Canada. The podium result follows his role as a co-captain of Canada’s Paralympic team and continues a run of top results that included a 2022 gold in snowboard cross.

Officials disqualify Japan’s Junta Kosuda after collision in Big Final

Turner advanced through both the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds before crashing in the four-man Big Final alongside Japan’s Junta Kosuda; officials conducted an on-course review and ultimately disqualified Kosuda, elevating Turner to third. Turner had been the top qualifier in the men’s SB-LL1 snowboard cross on Saturday with a top time of 51. 72 seconds, with playoff rounds and the medal final scheduled for Sunday.

Wu Zhongwei’s gold and Noah Elliott’s silver settle snowboard cross podium

China’s Wu Zhongwei took gold while American Noah Elliott claimed silver in the final classification. For tyler turner, the bronze arrived in a race that also underscored the chaos of snowboard cross: Turner crashed in the Big Final, Kosuda crossed the line first for third before the disqualification, and officials’ rulings altered the final placements.

Turner reflected on the race afterward, saying the crash will weigh on him but that chaos and crashes are part of the sport. He has previously described himself as an adrenalin enthusiast and has rebuilt a competitive career since losing both legs below the knee in a 2017 skydiving accident.

Turner’s result at Milano-Cortina is a continuation of his recent form; he was named the best winter male athlete in 2025 after winning the Crystal Globe as the overall standings leader, and he earned bronze in the banked slalom at his first Games in 2022 before capturing gold in snowboard cross at the 2022 Paralympics — Canada’s first-ever gold in para snowboard.

If Turner competes in the para snowboard banked slalom later in the Games, he could add another Paralympic medal to his career total.
