Cameron Young Takes Late Lead At Sawgrass As Players Championship Tightens

With the closing stretch underway at TPC Sawgrass, cameron young moved to 12 under through 16, seizing the lead as the tournament’s pressure points began to bite on Sunday.

Cameron Young Edges In Front As 17th Tests Nerves

The atmosphere spiked on the back nine, complete with chants of “USA, USA, USA” as the leaders navigated the most perilous holes. After both cameron young and Matt Fitzpatrick missed long birdie chances and moved on, the iconic par-three with swirling winds immediately demanded precision. From a plugged lie in a bunker, Young did well to find the putting surface and keep control of the moment.

Earlier, Fitzpatrick found the green safely, and Young took a similar aggressive line that skipped on and trickled closer, a sign of the leader’s poise as the tension rose. Neither could convert from distance on that hole, but Young’s steadiness kept him in front heading to the final stretch.

Schauffele Posts 11 Under; MacIntyre Slips To 10 Under

Xander Schauffele punctuated his round by rolling in a 20-footer for birdie on the last, setting a clubhouse target at 11 under after a 69. Robert MacIntyre, who had shared the thick of the chase, flew the green with his second on a late hole and could not get up and down, finishing at 10 under following a 69.

A snapshot of the board showed Young at 12 under through 16, Schauffele at 11 under in the house, MacIntyre at 10 under, and a cluster at nine under that included Yellamaraju, Bridgeman, and Ludvig Aberg still on the course. At eight under were Fleetwood, Straka, and Justin Thomas through 15. Further back, Koepka closed with 71, Rose with 72, Scheffler with 71, and McIlroy level following 71.

Fitzpatrick, Thomas And Aberg Navigate A Swinging Back Nine

Matt Fitzpatrick steadied himself by finding the middle of the green with his third on the par-five 16th, maintaining a patient approach on a day when momentum swung hole to hole. On the island-green 17th, Justin Thomas flirted with the water, then left a chip short of his standard before holing an 11-footer to salvage par and keep his round alive.

Ludvig Aberg’s challenge wobbled when he had to lay up short after finding pine straw on 15; his next chipped effort ran well past the flag, leaving work to save par. A missed putt brought another bogey, tightening the vise as the finishing stretch approached. With cameron young setting the pace, every swing on 17 and 18 carried extra weight as contenders fought to stay within reach.

With nerves spiking and the wind shifting, Sawgrass turned from scenic to severe in a hurry. The closing holes will decide whether the leader can convert under the spotlight or whether the clubhouse mark at 11 under becomes the number to chase down the stretch.
