Calgary Water Restrictions Begin Monday as City Warns of Fire Risks

Monday at 12: 01 a. m. ET — Calgary Water Restrictions begin as Calgary and surrounding areas return to Stage 4 for four weeks while the city performs critical repairs on the South Bearspaw feeder main, a move meant to protect water supply and emergency services.
Bow River Brewing Adjusts Processes Under Calgary Water Restrictions
Bow River Brewing co-owner and co-founder Ian Binmore said the brewery is already prepared but concerned about impacts on business. Binmore described processes and automation that let the brewery reuse cooling water—“so that we have some of the lowest water use of any craft brewery”—which helps reduce demand during the restrictions.
Glenmore Water Treatment Plant to Supply Most of City at Maximum Capacity
The city will rely on the Glenmore Water Treatment Plant to supply most of Calgary and the surrounding region while repairs are underway, with that facility operating at maximum capacity. Officials are asking Calgarians to cut use to keep daily consumption at or below 500 millions of litres, noting anything above that threshold raises risks of insufficient water to fight fires, low water pressure and potential for a boil water advisory or treatment system failure resulting in no water.
South Bearspaw feeder main Reinforcement Work Runs March 9–April 9
The restrictions follow a planned shutdown to perform reinforcement work along nine segments of the South Bearspaw feeder main that showed significant signs of deterioration in recent inspections. The work and the shutdown are described as critical repairs intended to address those deteriorated segments.
Stage 4 restrictions are scheduled to remain in place for four weeks, from March 9 to April 9, while the reinforcement work proceeds. Businesses that use large volumes of water are already implementing steps to cut consumption and protect operations during the shutdown.
April 9 at 11: 59 p. m. ET is the next confirmed milestone, when the four-week restrictions are scheduled to end and the city will complete the planned reinforcement work on the South Bearspaw feeder main.
