Gabriel Bortoleto Left Out of Q3 After Audi Stoppage, Lindblad Near-Miss

Audi’s Q3 prospects and nearby cars on pit exit were directly affected when gabriel bortoleto’s car stopped at pit entry, halting his run and threatening a pit-lane pile-up. Q2 8: 43 p. m. ET — the stoppage at the end of Q2 removed him from the final shootout and created a last-lap safety scramble.
Gabriel Bortoleto’s Q1 form and lost Q3 chance lift Audi attention
gabriel bortoleto had emerged as one of qualifying’s standout performers, featuring towards the top of the timesheet in Q1 and narrowly squeezing his Audi into the top-10 shootout. His progression into the final segment was Audi’s first Q3 appearance at the start of the season, but that promise did not translate into a Q3 run because of the stoppage at pit entry.
Arvid Lindblad and Liam Lawson narrowly avoided a pit-lane collision
Arvid Lindblad locked up while approaching the pit area and was forced to take evasive action to avoid contact with his Racing Bulls team-mate Liam Lawson, a near-miss triggered by the sudden stoppage. Lindblad’s lock-up and the close call with Lawson occurred as Bortoleto’s stationary Audi was blocking the pit entry, creating a dangerous moment at the end of Q2.
Nico Hulkenberg reports broader Audi gremlins during qualifying
Nico Hulkenberg was unable to join his team-mate in Q3 and finished 11th after a session he described as plagued by technical gremlins in his Audi. Hulkenberg said he only managed one clean lap in Q2 after fighting a number of systems that weren’t operating as expected, and he assessed the field position as reasonable given those issues.
Still, the stoppage itself centered on a gearbox problem: Bortoleto explained he had spent half a lap trying to engage gears and that his gears were failing, a fault that had appeared intermittently in free practice. He said this was the first time a reliability problem had occurred that weekend and that the timing—at the end of Q2—prevented any remedial action on track.
That said, Bortoleto described his overall qualifying as strong and expressed optimism about the race, noting Audi’s typically decent long-run performance. For now, his inability to take part in Q3 stands as a lost opportunity to improve starting position after an unexpectedly competitive Q1.
Hulkenberg added that several teams were managing problems across the session and that finishing where he did reflected a hectic qualifying period. He called the session “pretty hectic and interesting, ” saying the issues prevented a rhythm and limited his clean-lap opportunities in Q2.
Audi is yet to get to the bottom of the issue; Bortoleto said he is not too worried and is convinced the problem will be a small fix. If Audi’s investigation finds the gear failure is isolated to qualifying and not a race-day reliability risk, their midfield competitiveness for Sunday’s season-opener should remain intact.
