Drive Bc Alerts: Highway 1 Closures and Reopenings Disrupt Revelstoke–Golden Travel

Drivers between Revelstoke and Golden face stranded travel and no detour, Friday at 12: 00 p. m. ET when avalanche control work closed Highway 1, drive bc said. The shutdown has left motorists on a key trans‑mountain corridor waiting for updates and a confirmed reopening time.
Drive Bc notice: 142. 5‑kilometre closure between Townley Street and 14th Street North strands vehicles
The closure stretches about 142. 5 kilometres between Townley Street and 14th Street North, and officials say there is no detour available. The route is currently expected to reopen at 1: 00 p. m. ET on Sunday, March 8; drive bc said the next update was set for 12: 45 p. m. ET on March 8. This closure covers the full Revelstoke–Golden corridor and affects any motorist planning travel on Highway 1 through that segment.
Rogers Pass reopenings after avalanche control and vehicle incident ease travel
On Friday, avalanche control operations finished early on the west side of Glacier National Park, allowing about 10 kilometres around the West Gate of Rogers Pass to reopen. That stretch was shut at 9: 00 a. m. PST (12: 00 p. m. ET) on March 6 and staff gave the cue to reopen shortly before 11: 00 a. m. PST (2: 00 p. m. ET) the same day, earlier than the scheduled 2: 00 p. m. PST reopening. Separately, the Trans‑Canada Highway had been closed for more than four hours on March 5 after a vehicle incident that shut the route just after 8: 00 a. m. PST (11: 00 a. m. ET) and reopened before 1: 00 p. m. PST (4: 00 p. m. ET) that day.
Parks Canada warnings and restricted areas keep backcountry access limited
That said, Parks Canada projects avalanche danger in Glacier National Park to be high in the alpine, treeline and below for the coming weekend. Parks Canada closed all winter restricted areas along Highway 1 to visitors and backcountry users on Thursday; on the park’s east side, only the East Rogers and Shaughnessy winter restricted areas remained open on Friday. Those restrictions affect backcountry users and recreate planning for anyone relying on access through Rogers Pass.
More details are expected at 12: 45 p. m. ET on March 8; if avalanche control operations finish earlier, crews have reopened sections of the route ahead of schedule in previous incidents and could do so again.
